Pest infestations 'plaguing English hospitals'

Infestations of pests, such as rats, mice and bedbugs, are continually infesting NHS hospitals in England, it has been revealed.
In news which may be relevant to people with hospital doctor jobs, 70 per cent of NHS trusts were forced to bring in pest controllers at least 50 times over the past two years in order to tackle outbreaks, figures released under the Freedom of Information Act show.
However, the government has spoken out to reassure the public that the risks to patients caused by such vermin are "negligible".
Health minister Ivan Lewis said: "The claim that insects spread hospital-acquired infections is entirely unproven. There is no evidence of their carriage of antibiotic-resistant bacteria being a hazard to patients."
In other UK medical news, Richard Lewis, Welsh secretary of the British Medical Association, recently warned that more young doctors need to be attracted to work in Wales if the country is to avoid a shortage of GPs, the Daily Post reported.
