The first over-the-counter drug designed to treat chlamydia is to be made available, people with pharmacy jobs may be interested to hear.
Referred to as Clamelle, the pill will be available to people over the age of 16 who have tested positive for the infection, as well as for their sexual partners.
"Chlamydia is the most common sexually transmitted disease in the UK. Up to 70 per cent of people who have chlamydia have no symptoms and could therefore remain undiagnosed," stated Dr June Raine, director of vigilance and risk management of medicines at the Medicine and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).
Pharmacists will be able to hand over the drug later this year, according to a statement made on the organisation's website.
A government agency, the MHRA is responsible for ensuring that medicines and medical devices used in the UK conform to acceptably safe standards.
