'Young doctors needed in Wales to avoid GP shortage'

Wales must attract more young doctors if it is to avoid a shortage of GPs, it has been claimed.
According to Richard Lewis, Welsh secretary of the British Medical Association (BMA), more doctors are reaching the pre-retirement age group, meaning there may be gaps in services in the country unless younger medical professionals are drafted in, reports the Daily Post.
Indeed, BMA figures published earlier this year revealed that the number of GPs aged 60 and over has increased since 1997, while numbers of such professionals under 40 years old have fallen.
It has also been found that the average age of a family doctor working in Wales has risen to 46 since devolution, those with UK medical jobs may be interested to discover.
Earlier this week, it was reported that a shortage of paramedics in Gloucestershire has meant that the military, private companies and personnel from St John Ambulance have been drafted in by the Great Western Ambulance Trust in order to cope with callouts.
