Calls for NHS pay rises amid gas price hikes

In the wake of recent announcements by British Gas that it is raising its prices by 35 per cent, calls have been made for a rethink of NHS pay deals.
Unite, a union which claims to have over two million members, has called for the immediate reopening of pay talks, saying rising utility costs mean the government's policy to hold NHS pay rises below the rate of inflation for three years is now untenable.
"British Gas's breathtaking announcement is the latest outrageous price rise in utility, housing, food and petrol costs," stated David Fleming, Unite's national officer for health.
He added: "The soaring cost of living these rises have generated will eventually mean ministers will have to revisit their NHS pay policy."
The union, which represents people in a range of occupations - including some of those with UK medical jobs - says the current arrangement concerning pay is, in effect, a substantial cut, considering that the retail price index inflation rate is around 4.6 per cent.
